3 Steps to Properly Smudge Your Home

Spiritual Purification: Clearing Energies with a Burning Smudge Stick

Sage smudge: Cleansing smoke channels spiritual energy, purifying the atmosphere

1) Buy your Smudge Stick

I have used so many different sizes of smudge sticks in the sage burning ritual of "saging a house." I have bought them from Whole Foods chains to farmers markets to craft fairs. You can also buy ones with other herbs webbed into them. My advice: Find YOUR smudge stick. My guidelines for smudging are going to be very personal. My personal my not be the same as your personal, just like my type of dessert choice might not be the same as yours. We are all individuals and for that reason we all need to find what works for each of us.

I prefer the smaller size, just dried white sage. I find the bigger ones fall apart on me and they generate more smoke. Some people like the more smoke, I'm not fan. It makes me feel smothered, or maybe I'm just part demon and all those religions zealots were right all along. I prefer to think I just don't need that much smudge to get the job done. I do have friends that love sage with dried lavender or Palo Santo mixed into it. Again, personal preference. You can always look into what works best for you and what serves your needs best.

Now, to use the sage stick simply light the end and when you have a solid flame, gently blow it out so the embers produce a rising smoke. When the cleanse is complete, I rub the smoldering end in the dirt to extinguish completely.

No matter what size or variation of smudge stick you choose, you need to open windows and doors.

2) Open Air Ways

You may choose to spread the smoke with a feather, others will simply wave the sage stick right to left, back and forth. Some people hold the stick in their hands while others will use an Abalone shell, or a special pot. Some may open windows, others open doors. This is a key factor in smudging, open airways. It is important to allow the energies you are trying to clear to have a pathway to release out. Opening doors and windows also helps to prevent the smoke alarms from going off, which is just good to know ahead of time, trust me on this one. 😂

You may encounter a room that has no direct link to the outside. I have seen this with bathrooms, but mostly closets. Of course you would leave the doors open but I also suggest lighting a white candle in the space, I find it helps with guidance for the spirit or energy you are trying to clear. Now that your airways are open, light your sage and get ready for step three, because believe it or not, step three is the hardest step for most people.

Candle illuminates window, guiding spirits through ethereal realms with divine light

Open Airways, if none are available, as in a closet or bathroom, light a white candle.

3) Speak From The Heart

As you walk around your space speak, out loud, what is in your heart. I find when I ask people to speak from their heart, they draw a blank. I do believe people are so afraid of being judged on their authentic self they get uncomfortable when put on the spot. If you are not sure what to say or where to start, then start with how you are currently feeling. Do you feel scared, nervous, ashamed, embarrassed? Maybe you want to call on your favorite angel or perhaps a loved one that has past. Almost as if you are calling on back-up for your cleanse, some one or something to give you the guidance and courage you can't seem to find for yourself. Starting is the hardest part. Once you being to speak from the heart you will find the words will just start flowing through you.

Continue through your space. It is OK to repeat yourself from room to room. If something pops into your mind when you enter a new space, add it into your speech. Trust your gut. The gut never lies.

Best time to cleanse a space

I always cleanse my home after any renovations and after any arguments. Those are the two most important times for me, personally. Again, follow your own intuition. If you are sitting around and just feeling sad or heavy, get up and cleanse your space.

There are many religions and cultures that use smudging as a technique in their worshiping, the fine details may vary but one thing that is the same and I believe the one thing that makes for a successful cleanse is speaking from the heart. Nothing in this world will ever be more important then being your authentic self and speaking your authentic truth.

Sage Cleanse Ritual Summed Up

-Open airways to outside

-Light sage to flaming, gently blow out to smolder (smoking)

-Walk around while speaking, out loud, from the heart.

Adults like to complicate things with too much thinking. Sometimes you have to take your brain out if it and just let the heart and gut lead you.
